Budapest at a glance
Budapest is Buda's hills and royal landmarks on one bank of the Danube, and Pest's boulevards, markets and nightlife on the other. First-time stops sit in a manageable centre on metro, tram and frequent buses; thermal baths and river views set the tone.
Quick information
Spring and early autumn are usually comfortable for long walks and outdoor viewpoints. Summer can be hot and busy; winter is colder and darker but suits baths, cafés and indoor sights. River levels or weather can occasionally affect Danube services.

Best areas to stay
Inner City (District V)
Belváros-Lipótváros
Close to the Danube, Parliament, the Basilica and several metro lines; convenient but usually among the more expensive bases.
Best for
First visits and central walking
Jewish Quarter (District VII)
Erzsébetváros
Dense with restaurants, bars and transport. Street noise is the main trade-off, so check the exact block and room position.
Best for
Food, nightlife and short stays
Palace Quarter (District VIII)
Palotanegyed
A central area of historic streets near the National Museum, with easy tram and metro access and calmer pockets away from the ring road.
Best for
Architecture, cafés and better value
Castle District
Várnegyed
Beautiful and peaceful after day visitors leave, but hill access, fewer late options and higher prices make it less practical for some travellers.
Best for
Historic atmosphere and quiet evenings
Újlipótváros (District XIII)
Újlipótváros
A lived-in riverside neighbourhood near Margaret Island with useful tram links and a calmer evening rhythm than the party district.
Best for
Local cafés and longer stays
