Los Angeles at a glance

Los Angeles is a spread-out city of neighbourhoods, beaches and wide distances. Hollywood Boulevard, Griffith Observatory, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, the Getty Center, Downtown LA, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, the Universal Studios area and Malibu sit on Metro hops, buses and road connections, with day trips to Malibu, the Disneyland area, Joshua Tree and Santa Barbara. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the catalogue airport. Distances are large; a car can help between clusters, but you still plan one neighbourhood at a time. Do not invent traffic times — build slack and confirm current Metro, FlyAway and road conditions.

Budget travelAccommodation and any theme-park, Getty, Malibu or Joshua Tree day drive costs most strongly. Check current prices close to travel instead of relying on a fixed estimate.

Spring and autumn suit Griffith, Santa Monica and Getty terraces without peak summer heat. Summer is busy at the beaches; keep indoor hours for museums. Recheck official air-quality and park advice before any desert day.
