Osaka at a glance
Osaka is a food city of a castle, food streets and easy Kansai day trips. Osaka Castle, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Kuromon Market, Shinsekai, Tsutenkaku, Umeda Sky Building, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, Namba Yasaka Shrine and Osaka Station / Umeda are linked by the subway and JR, with day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Himeji. The airports are Kansai (KIX) and Itami (ITM). ICOCA or Suica simplifies trains; try takoyaki, okonomiyaki, kushikatsu and ramen.
Quick information
Spring and autumn suit the castle grounds, Dotonbori and Kyoto or Nara days. Summer is humid; keep indoor hours for Kaiyukan. Winter is useful for markets if you dress for wind on the river.
