Prague at a glance
Prague is a largely intact medieval centre, Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and long views over the Vltava. The historic core is best on foot; metro, trams and buses reach neighbourhoods with a different local feel.
Quick information
Spring and early autumn suit long walks and river views. Summer is the busiest period; winter is cold and daylight is short, but the historic centre can feel atmospheric.

One-day itinerary
- Morning: Explore Pražský hrad and Katedrála svatého Víta, checking access to the interiors you want to see.
- Lunch: Descend into Malá Strana for a Czech lunch and a break from the hills.
- Afternoon: Cross Karlův most to Staroměstské náměstí and Pražský orloj; leave time for the side streets.
- Evening: Walk beside the Vltava and choose dinner away from the busiest bridge approaches.
Best areas to stay
Staré Město
The historic core puts major sights close together, with crowds, nightlife noise and higher prices as the trade-off.
Best for
First visit and maximum walkability
Malá Strana
A beautiful base below Prague Castle with steep lanes, baroque streets and quick access to Charles Bridge.
Best for
Castle access and old-world atmosphere
Nové Město
A practical central district around Wenceslas Square and the river, with broad hotel and dining choices.
Best for
Transport, museums and a central base
Vinohrady
Leafy streets, cafés and reliable metro or tram access make it calmer than the tourist core.
Best for
Residential character and restaurants
Holešovice
A northern district with galleries, markets and modern dining, connected to the centre by tram and metro.
Best for
Contemporary culture and independent venues
Smíchov
A busy west-bank base around Anděl with shops and transport, close to the river but less historic in feel.
Best for
Transport links and better-value rooms
