The Hermitage, Palace Square, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, St Isaac's Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, Nevsky Prospect, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Faberge Museum, the Summer Garden and the canals are linked by metro and walking routes, with day trips to Peterhof, Pushkin / Tsarskoye Selo, Pavlovsk and Vyborg only where current official advice and access allow. Morning: Arrive early at the Hermitage in the Winter Palace on Palace Square; focus on the Rembrandt hall and the Italian masters.
Lunch: Solyanka soup and a Leningrad-style cutlet at a stolovaya near the Nevsky Prospekt end of the Hermitage.
Afternoon: Walk the Griboedov Canal to the Church on the Spilled Blood (Saviour on Blood) for the extraordinary mosaic-covered interiors.
Evening: Promenade on Nevsky Prospekt from the Admiralty to the Fontanka River in the long White Nights light.
