Itineraries

Best areas to stay

  1. City centre (Avenida San Martín area)

    Centro

The flat strip along San Martín and parallel streets (Maipú, Roca) concentrates most restaurants, shops and the tourist pier. The most convenient base for a short stay; lively in summer evenings. Most accommodation here is small hotels and hostels.

    Best for

Walking distance to restaurants, the pier and artisan market

  2. Harbourfront (near Muelle Turístico)

    Puerto / Muelle

Hotels and guesthouses along the harbourfront put you within metres of the catamaran and excursion piers. Ideal if you are doing a Beagle Channel boat trip first thing. A slightly quieter setting than the main San Martín strip.

    Best for

Beagle Channel views, morning boat excursion embarkation

  3. Uphill residential (above San Martín)

    Zona alta

The streets rising steeply above the commercial centre offer panoramic views across the Beagle Channel and Navarino Island. Several boutique and mid-range hotels are set here. Requires a short uphill walk back from restaurants; taxis are frequent.

    Best for

Mountain views, quieter surroundings, better-value small hotels

  4. Near airport (Las Hayas area)

    Las Hayas

The area around the Martial Glacier access road, 4–5 km from the centre, has a handful of upscale forest lodges. Quiet and scenic but requires taxis for all city activities. Best for those who prioritise nature views over convenience.

    Best for

Very early or late flights, forest-edge setting

  5. Hostels and budget guesthouses

    Hostels

Ushuaia has a good selection of hostels concentrated in the centre. Many are used as bases by trekkers doing the Dientes de Navarino or Travesía Tierra del Fuego routes. A sociable environment with helpful staff who know local excursion operators.

    Best for

Budget travel, meeting other hikers and trekkers

  6. Antarctic departure base

    Puerto de Ushuaia

If you are joining an Antarctic cruise departing from Ushuaia, most operators recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation. The port area has hotels of all categories within walking distance of the cruise terminals on Avenida Maipú.

    Best for

Pre-departure nights before Antarctic expedition cruises
